In past articles for Indigo Sun I have shared personal experiences and insights with you, trusting that others may benefit from the fruits of my search. This time I am sharing with you an unfolding drama that is very personal to me and to my family. On September 23, 1999, my brother disappeared. It was as if he just walked out the door to put out the trash. At first the police insisted that he had just gone on a vacation and refused to help us search for him. At the time this article is being written we still have no resolution to the mystery. Several people are in jail charged with stealing his money and vehicles, using his credit cards, and stealing from his home.

I reached out to several people who tapped into “Universal Consciousness.” They generously gave time, energy, and prayers, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. In addition, another person has entered my life that I believe plays an important role. His name is John Edward, and he is a psychic medium.

At my lowest moment since September 23 I was asked if I would be willing to assist John Edward to introduce himself to the Houston community. The hair stood up on my arms, so I knew I needed to pay attention and follow the guidance I was receiving at that time. Although I have worked with many psychics, I have never been attracted to psychic mediums. (Psychic mediums are people who specialize in communicating with dead spirits, conveying their messages to their loved ones.) I forced my closed mind to creak open and accept the possibility that Spirit was giving me answers to my prayers for resolution of this tragic situation.

Because my company’s mission is to help heal our community, I had to satisfy myself that John’s work would be compatible with our purpose. I read John’s new book, One Last Time, explored his website (http://www.johnedward.net), and asked to speak with John by telephone. I wanted to be certain in my own heart that his purpose was truly to heal, but I also wanted to hear from my brother.

During that call I asked him to describe himself, and what he shared with me rang true. Then I asked about my brother, since the police insist that he is dead (with no evidence). But that didn’t happen. John received nothing from or about Ted. I did receive information from other family members that was quite specific and is important to me. Although I was disappointed not to have the answers to my questions about Ted, I found his honesty and forthright nature reassuring and felt perfectly comfortable to commit to helping him reach the people of this community.

John explained to me that he has a very simple mission, which is to reach out to those who have passed on to the other side and reconnect them with the loved ones they have left behind “one last time.” His book, One Last Time, describes his life and experiences in an interesting, easy-to-read way. Into the book he has woven information and insights that are valuable to anyone on a spiritual path.

John is extremely specific in the information he shares and never tries to make that information fit circumstances. And it is the honesty of this approach which has made believers of so many skeptics, including me. On a recent Larry King Live show, John received impressions about a caller’s dead husband, including the cause of his death (lung cancer), that he was a smoker, that he had been buried with a pack of cigarettes, and that the cigarettes were not the brand he smoked. The widow was comforted by her dead husband’s amusement about the cigarettes and his loving concern for her.

John tells his audiences, which number in the thousands, that each of us has own psychic abilities. We just need to be open and receptive to them. To help us empower ourselves, he included a chapter in his book on techniques for tapping into your own psychic ability. Some points he makes are:

It is important that we recognize and accept the impressions we receive. They are meant to reassure us that our loved ones, though no longer with us in body, are truly all right and have simply passed into another form. They want to comfort us and let us know that they are still a part of our lives. Spiritual energy is around us all the time; often it is very intense immediately after a loved one has died. Vivid dreams may not be just dreams, but visits from the other side. Also, we may feel the loved one’s presence in the room or smell the person’s perfume or pipe tobacco. There may be coincidences when we think about our loved one and the lights flicker or a meaningful song comes on the radio. We may even “see” that loved one in a crowd. On the other hand, we may be blocked from receiving impressions by the intensity of our emotions.

It is important to relax as you open up to messages from your loved ones. Meditation will relax you, get rid of stress and negativity, and focus your energies. Then, you can use visualization to turn up your psychic receptors. Also, you may wish to use a familiar ritual (praying the rosary, saying a prayer you learned as a child, using chant) to intensify your focus. John’s book contains an excellent meditation that you can record to help you to receive psychic impressions from your loved ones.

In his book he provides a Heritage Journal, which can be used to record impressions, messages and symbols, and reflections on loved ones who have passed to the other side. These pages will help you remember details about your loved ones that you may otherwise forget, information that might help you interpret the messages that you receive. These profiles also act as a tribute to those who were important in your life. By recording special dates and experiences that are meaningful to you and your loved ones, you are creating a legacy to share with future generations so that the memory of your loved ones will live on forever. When you express your thoughts and feelings and recall the special things about your loved ones, you will help ease the pain of their loss and instead will remember the joy of having had them in your life.

Psychic medium John Edward is a frequent guest on Larry King Live and has appeared on many shows, including Leeza, Charles Grodin, and Roseanne. He is the subject of a current HBO special with Linda Ellerbee.
