The Responsibility

of Mediumship

by Joey Crinita

A medium’s responsibility is to be as clear a channel as possible in all his dealings. Since mediumship is of an emotional nature, the psychic must strive to be of a sound emotional make-up when functioning in this capacity. The human factor is always involved and the sensitive must take care not to color that which he receives from spirit with his own emotional reaction to any given situation. Responsibility demands that the psychic always operates from a basis of emotional stability when giving personal guidance and counseling.

The caliber of mediumship depends entirely upon how genuinely spiritual the person is and how close a contact he/she has established with his/her spirit associates who guide and furnish the information which is given out. We are responsible for our own spiritual growth, which can be heightened by continual prayer and practice, as psychic ability is no guarantee of spirituality.

People seek our psychics for a variety of reasons, and the medium must be prepared to deal with many different and often crucial situations. He must be able to tune in and deliver what he receives or is impressed with to the recipient, with the least interference from himself. The medium’s role is often one of a double check to encourage the recipient in discovering his own potential for directing his life. It is irresponsible on the part of a medium to create a dependence upon himself by others, resulting in people not handling their own lives and accepting their own personal responsibility.

The idea of fraud has often been associated with mediumship, and often that which appears to be fraud on the part of a medium is simply a case of self-delusion encouraged by psychic immaturity. It is only after a medium has reached a point of maturity in his development, and has acquired a certain degree of mastery over his psychic faculties, that he is able to distinguish what is genuine from what is a product of his unconscious mind. The self-deluded can convince themselves of whatever they wish.

Below are some questions I am frequently asked about mediumship:

Some people seem to have one guide; others speak about a great number of guides. Just how is the number determined?

Primarily it depends upon the function of the individual medium. If a medium exhibits four or five different phases of mediumship, he/she may attract guides who are specialists in each particular area. In other cases there may be only one guide who will direct all facts of the medium’s work.

When one hears mediums constantly speak of the large number of guides that they may have, or of the illustrious personalities on the other side with whom they are frequently in contact, it may be that the medium is suffering from a large dose of ego.

Can two different people have the same spirit guide?

Yes! The same spirit guide can assist and work with one or more mediums. For example, a spirit may have a faculty for clairvoyance. He may find several mediums whose vibrations are in harmony with his, and he will assist them, in the same sense that one teacher on the earth plane can have twenty different students studying the same subject.

Would a spirit guide ever urge you to do something that is against your nature?

No they would not. Spirit does not dictate to us and would never advise us to do anything that is morally or physically unethical. If a spirit tells you to do something that is outside your moral code of behavior, I suggest you use your common sense and begin to question where the instructions are coming from.

Do our religious beliefs and nationality determine the type of guide we would attract?

No. We have free will; spirit cannot interfere in our lives. They may try to subtly influence us for our own good, but we must make our own decisions and live our own lives, accepting responsibility for our actions.

Are emotions closely linked to our psychic abilities?

I believe that the medium uses the emotions to convey the message given during a direct spirit contact. The medium conveys the emotions of the spirit entities who have come to manifest from the other side of life and he must translate what he feels, hears or senses into words. That emotion comes through. I really believe that behind it all we use emotional energy so we must be tapping into some part of our emotional make-up which we use for the psychic.

We function on three levels; the physical, emotional and the intellectual. While we don’t really understand the mechanics of mediumship per se, I feel it is definitely tied into the emotions and emotional body. There are different facets of mediumship and mediums work differently, receive their impressions differently and function on different rates of vibration. Some mediums work on a very quick vibration while others work on a slower vibration. However, the emotional tie is there and you will find the more emotional mediums work on a quicker vibration I believe the emotional body becomes charged with extra energy enabling the medium to perceive. In our daily lives we perceive with our emotions; either we like someone or we don’t. We may even experience a physical reaction in our solar plexus and have our temper flare with the adrenalin shooting right up; it’s all sensing and feeling.

Would you say your spiritual awareness measures your mediumship?

I feel that my own spiritual evolution determines the quality of my mediumship. A person can be psychic and tune into mundane things working from the outside of the individual as opposed to the inner or soul level. I want to reach people at that spiritual level because that is where they’re at. You have to ignite that flame within. That’s what spirit is working for.

My responsibility as a medium and as a person is for soul cultivation and the purification of my own personality. When working for spirit, the clearer the channel, the higher expression of spirituality. Spirit can only give you what you are capable of receiving. If you are a one hundred watt receiver you’ll get a one hundred watt message; or you’ll get messages that are one hundred watt contacts. It’s up to you to increase your voltage and by doing that become more aware and that means being more responsible for your life. You then catch yourself quicker in those little games that you play but also can get rid of them and clean up your act quicker.
