MUSIC COLOR AND HEALTH

by Ann Alexander

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me....

I once was lost but now am found,

Was blind, but now, I see.

T’was Grace that taught... my heart to fear.

And Grace, my fears relieved.

How precious did that Grace appear...

the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...

we have already come.

T’was Grace that brought us safe thus far..

and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me...

His word my hope secures.

He will my shield and portion be...

as long as life endures.

When we’ve been here a thousand years...

bright shining as the sun.

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise...

then when we’ve first begun. ”

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me....

I once was lost but now am found,

Was blind, but now, I see.

The German poet Novelist wrote “every illness is a musical problem, and healing therefore is a musical resolution.”

The vibrational power of music and sound profoundly affects our body, mind, and soul. It can charge our energy field with wellness and harmony rather than illness and disharmony because our bodies are living resonators of sound vibrations.

Here is an example of what happens as you listen to a song, giving information that can reveal how and why music and color are powerful curative agents. I will use Amazing Grace because hundreds of people have recorded it in every musical genre. Let’s say you are listening to Judy Collins, Michael Crawford, Willie Nelson, or Jessye Norman.

What happens? The sound travels via air waves into your ears. In the inner ear the waves are converted into mechanical energy, then the organ of corti converts the mechanical energy, into electrochemical energy which travels through the auditory portion of cranial nerve eight to your brain for interpretation.

There are no receptors for sound in your brain, but Amazing Grace went into your ears and became ENERGY for your body. Music delivers vibrational electrochemical energy. That energy is what flows in our bodies in order for us to stay well. It is prana, chi, life force vibrations for the body’s two receiving and distributing systems: The nervous system and endocrine glands. Now I will divide the word electrochemical and briefly discuss each half. Electro - your central nervous system received the energy and your heart beat faster or slower.

Muscles, organs, and bones (yes, bones conduct sound) respond to the vibration of Amazing Grace. There is a physiological response to the rhythm, melody, harmony, and the words. Cymatics, the work of Hans Jenny, revealed that matter actually responds to sound by forming patterns. What patterns are formed to tune up and heal is a unique and subjective experience. Each body is unique, and the energy utilization is therefore subjective.

What most people report is that they can feel an almost immediate elevation of their energy level as they experience music. Chemical - your endocrine system received an energy charge from Amazing Grace. Glands of the endocrine system are the body’s hormonal distributors of chemical energy directly into the bloodstream. Hormones are the energy messengers to our body cells.

Overlaying the glands are a palpable energy field called chakras. They exist in the electromagnetic energy field where ganglia of nerves conflux in the body, in and around glands and organs, places where the life force enters as vibrational energy.

What is vibrational energy? Sound is the audible kind and color is the visible kind. We now know that the mind acts as a computerized color information bank that stores experiences in their respective colors. We can call those rays or icons. I like icon because an icon is stored experience or information. There are color icons in the mid-brain area that store emotional experiences of similar vibrational frequencies, or emotional memory, which our minds translate as colors. The icons are labeled to match the visible light spectrum that our eyes perceive: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, violet, and indigo, as well as many other combinations of those frequencies.

Back to Amazing Grace. Its emotional content belongs to the purple violet icon, the file that musically contains things like Gregorian chants, Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, and thousands (or millions?) of similar vibrations. Your karmic memory bank may have a lot of purple violet stored, in which case you would like Amazing Grace and would enjoy hearing it, singing it.

It is IN YOU! Or... you won’t like it. Maybe you feel it is too slow, or it makes you cry, or perhaps it brings up memories into which you would like to toss a grenade. A song that creates a sense of healing and relaxation for one person can sound discordant or painful to another. In either case, whether you like the song or not, Amazing Grace is vibration, electrochemical energy that your nervous system and endocrine glands have a definite response to and use for, and those two systems are the body’s major health keepers.

Those two health keeper systems powerfully inform us as to how and why music and sound can harmonize us, foster our wellness, and produce a musical benefit for our wellness and healing. They are continually vibrating and sending messages throughout our body/mind - they are in constant response to our sonic environment.

Wonder what John Newton would think of all this. He was the sea captain who wrote Amazing Grace in 1779 after having a life-altering spiritual experience at sea. His ship had been transporting bodies for the slave trade. He greatly transformed his life after returning to the British Isles and became a minister.

I believe the song speaks to all of us collectively as well as individually. It shares a universal message which can comfort, inspire, and tune us in to some measure of grace within our spirit. It seems to be an archetypal song of our human journey from darkness into light, from unawareness to consciousness. For several decades my daily work has been the privilege of listening to and working with music and voices. I have learned a lot about what those sounds mean, storing the information into a deepening intuition. Within the past 15 years bioelectrical research has revealed more information about the brain, and there is still an enormous field of discovery ahead of us. It may end up that the intuitive figured it out long ago, but that the scientist will reveal the underlying reasons. I enjoy knowing things both ways, and I love this exciting time where Western, Eastern, and Oriental methods of healing are slowly creating a new paradigm for wellness and healing.

So choose your music, choose your energy. What a deal! You get to enjoy the very thing that keeps you healthy and that brings its curative power to you to help you transform and heal.
