Hearing Heaven Clearly
by Doreen Virtue, Ph.D.

“How can I hear the voice of heaven?” I’m often asked this question by people who want to know how to have conversations with God, Jesus, a deceased loved one, or their guardian angel. I’ve found that many people, as much as they’d like to hear Divine guidance, are also simultaneously afraid. These fears need to be recognized and released before we can truly open our spiritual ears.

One reason why we fear listening to Divine guidance is because it always empowers us. We are made in the image and likeness of the all-powerful Creator. Therefore, we are inherently extremely powerful. Yet, many of us behave as if we were hapless and impotent victims of external powers.

The truth is that we are often afraid of being powerful. Women, for instance, often believe that power is equivalent to aggressiveness, which is in turn equivalent to unattractiveness. So, a lot of women fear being abandoned or criticized if they let their power shine. Men sometimes fear becoming power-hungry or even abusing it, so they abandon much of their personal power. Both sexes fear misusing their power and unwittingly making a mistake in judgment that hurts others.

One of the greatest tools that I’ve found in alleviating the fear of accepting our God-given power is “affirmations.” As you may know, affirmations are positive statements, worded in the here-and-now, stating that what you want to come true, has already come to pass. For instance, “I have a very happy and loving marriage,” “My body is fit and healthy,” or “My credit cards are completely paid in full.” Affirmations work because repetitious phrases help  reprogram the mind’s expectations, and these expectations create self-fulfilling prophesies. Also, if you expect something positive to occur, you are more likely to act in ways that attract a positive outcome.

Here is a powerful healing affirmation that helps to undo fear connected with   accepting your power. State this affirmation either silently or aloud, two times each morning and whenever you feel afraid of being powerful, with great conviction: “It is safe for me to be powerful. I now have the consciousness that uses power in a loving way to benefit everybody.” If you have misused your power in the past, the angels will remind you that you and your circumstances have evolved since then. The angels say,

“Today, you are more sensitive to the feelings of those around you, and this awareness will prevent you from inflicting pain with your power. You are now actually incapable of abusing your power to the degree you did before.”

You have the ability to be powerful in a way that benefits others. For example, the angels may help you to dynamically inspire other people. Or, they help you carve out a career or avocation that is service-oriented, such as   being a teacher, healer, or counselor.

Don’t be afraid to be powerful! Ask the angels to release you from any such fear. Simply think a request such as, “I ask that you enter into my heart and my consciousness and remove any patterns that block me from enjoying my God-given power.” You’ll feel a palpable movement in your body, signifying that the angels are answering your request. This method is especially powerful if applied before bedtime, enabling the angels to work with you during your sleep.

Another common fear that plugs our spiritual ears is the fear that you are unworthy of God’s attention, or that you somehow don’t deserve happiness. Divine guidance always leads you to enjoy the life that your Creator designed for you: a life of harmony, growth, abundance, and love. If you fear that you don’t deserve these God-given gifts, you’ll likely push Divine prescriptions away. For instance, you might feel unworthy of God’s attention because you judge yourself for not attending church or temple, or because you feel guilty about a mistake you made.

We actually believe God’s love is conditional love, by insisting that we’re not worthy in our present state of accepting His help. You think, “I’m not ready for happiness yet. First I must (fill in the blank: lose weight, graduate, pay off my bills, etc.; then I’ll deserve happiness) . . .” This is similar to a person who cleans their house before the housekeeper arrives. It is backwards. In order for God to be a giver, a gracious receiver is necessary. By playing the role of the receiver, you allow God to fulfill His will to give.

When you allow God to help support you, you are in a better position to help other people. For instance, God might help you to be a more cheerful person so that your optimistic disposition inspires others. Or, He might help you begin a career in a helping profession so that you can benefit others. God might give you abundant time, energy, or money, so that you can volunteer at a charitable organization. A Course in Miracles says it beautifully:

“All gifts I give my brothers are my own. As every gift my brothers give is mine, so every gift I give belongs to me. . . My treasure house is full, and angels watch its open doors that not one gift is lost, and only more are added. Let me come to where my treasures are, and enter in where I am truly welcome at home, among the gifts that God has given me.”

In other words, when you allow God to help you, you are helping other people. So think of it this way: you deserve to give. Will you allow God to help you, so that you can give to others? God and the angels continuously try to help us. “Try” is the operative word, since they can’t force help upon us. We must ask for their help, and then be open to receiving it. Accept God’s Divine guidance and other assistance with gratitude, knowing that you’ll pass the gifts along to others.
