Flower Essences for Companion Animals
By Marti Miller, M.A.

Does your dog go crazy when you leave him or her alone? Is your house or yard destroyed when you return? Are your neighbors complaining because your beloved companion barks all day while you are at work? Is your cat refusing to use the litter box? This may be because your pet is missing you so much that he or she becomes frustrated when you are not at home with them. The experts call this emotional state separation anxiety.

It’s not necessary for companion animals to suffer emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually. Help is available in the healing form of flower essences. Flower essences are  solutions, created from flowers, which contain specific healing vibrations. Flower essences work in a gentle, subtle manner to assist your companion to bring forward its true nature of peace, love, and cooperation. Flower essences are powerful and effective because animals are closely connected with the vibration of the earth and of nature. They easily grasp and use the healing intention of the flower.

If you have a companion animal that is anxious, has been rescued, or is experiencing fear, flower essences are a safe and easily to administered healing tool. They have no harmful side effects. I have found them to be effective to promote balance and healing in my practice with all kinds of animals. You can put some in their water, on wet food, directly in their mouth or place it on their ears or fur. You can also dilute the remedy and spray it in the air.

A source of companion animals’ emotional traumas may come from abuse or from being confined in a kennel or shelter with very little human or animal contact. Animals also experience grief, depression, and jealousy of other animals or humans. They likewise absorb the emotions of the humans around them. When a companion animal is under continual emotional stress, there is a greater chance of dis-ease manifesting in their body.
I have worked with many different kinds of emotional challenges in companion animals. I was recently called to communicate with a black lab and to consult with his owner. The dog was showing signs of depression. He didn’t enjoy playing and paced continually around the house. When I tuned into the dog, I could feel his sadness and grief. I related these emotions to his human guardian, and she mentioned the death of his brother and his subsequent depression. I mixed a blend of flower essences for the lab; after a few days of taking the essence he was feeling better, had became more playful, and stopped his repetitive pacing.

In another case, I visited with a cat who experienced feelings of abandonment when he was left by his original family. This emotion manifested as asthma when the new family took him into their lives. He felt sadness and grief over the loss of his previous humans. I mixed a flower essence for him. Since taking it, he is happier and better adjusted.

A trip to the veterinarian can be very traumatic for an animal companion. I visited with a dog who been taken recently to the vet’s office. I had seen this same dog a couple of times before this visit. When I saw him after a visitto the vet, his personality had changed dramatically. The flower essences that I chose, indicated that he was experiencing separation from his spiritual purpose. These flower essences assisted him to make a reconnection. Within a few days he was back to his playful self.

There are times when animals become so stressed that they temporarily check out of their bodies. This can often look like a seizure. In some situations flower essences can help. I want to emphasize here that with seizures and other illnesses, it is necessary to consult your veterinarian.

The most commonly available flower essences are by Bach, and are found in local natural food stores. I recommend that all guardians of companion animals keep a bottle of Bach’s Rescue Remedy on hand. It   assists in situations of stress, injury, or trauma. In serious cases of trauma,  Rescue Remedy has stopped shock from occurring. Rescue Remedy is available as a liquid or topical cream.

It’s also a good idea to give Rescue Remedy to an animal who has been  rescued from a shelter. Putting a few drops in your new companion’s water dish will ease the transition period. Other helpful Bach remedies are Mimulus for fear and Star of Bethlehem for all trauma. Walnut is also great to give when you and your companion move to a new home or in other times of transition, such as the  arrival of a new animal or a new baby.

I find that customizing a formula for each animal’s needs is most effective. Sometimes, I recommend a different mix of formulas every couple of weeks, depending on the severity of the trauma or if the behavior needs to be changed. When an animal companion undergoes surgery, essences can assist the healing process. For example, flower essences can help ease the trauma of spaying or neutering your companion animal. Anaflora, based in Mt. Shasta, California, makes an essence formula specifically for recovering from spraying or neutering procedures. Many other companies make essences from flowers around the world, and these are easily available in this country by mail or Internet. Also, you will find many helpful books written about the endless benefits of  flowers essences.
