Divine Intervention

A Touching story of a mother's journey to heal her daughter.

The thunderstorm outside had just barely lowered the Texas heat to 90 degrees. I had just finished doing two weeks worth of grocery shopping with my three children, two boys ages 9 and 3 and my new daughter age 4 months. We had recently discovered that our daughter had a congenital heart defect that would require open-heart surgery. That fact, I must admit, had really threatened my spiritual beliefs.

While waiting in the check out line an elderly lady, struggling with a cake, ice cream, and ginger ale, stood in line behind me. I offered her my spot in line and after a delightful conversation discovered that her items were for her own 89th birthday. She had outlived all of her relatives, including her own children, yet she was still celebrating life. I was in awe of this extraordinary woman. I helped her sack her groceries, as we were at one of those "sack your own" stores, and they were unwilling to bend their rules even for this delightful lady. I also saw to it that her items were taken to the car for her. As she walked away she said "Ya know, good things happen to good people."

At least 25 minutes later, after sacking two baskets full of groceries, I stood at my car, in the rain, frantic! I couldn't find my keys. I had no one to call because my husband was out running the remainder of our weekend errands. My food was melting and my daughter was hungry and fussy. I hurried back into the store to ask the manager if he could help. The store was huge! There were at least 28 aisles and all the shelves were about six feet wide in order to accommodate the cases of food they sold in bulk. The manager was unwilling to inconvenience his customers or his staff to assist me in my search. A kind security guard did volunteer to watch my young children while I searched. After 15 minutes, with no luck, I began to cry. Still walking up and down the isles, I threw my hands up and said, (angrily towards God), "I could really use a little help here!"

The words had barely slipped from my mouth when I heard, "Get Down on Your Knees!" I thought it had come from the loud speaker, but no explanation followed. I took two or three more steps and again I heard, "Get Down on Your Knees!" I knew now that I was the only one who heard this voice. I thought "Great, he wants me to get down and pray right here!?" I must admit I was a little apprehensive, but I did it. As I dropped to my knees, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted something shiny. It was my keys. They had slid three feet under the shelf. I could've looked all day and never found them on my own. I looked up and said a grateful "Thank you." As I was loading my groceries into the car, still amazed by what had just happened, a car pulled up beside me. It was the elderly lady from the check out line. "I told you good things happen to good people," she said. I just stood there with my mouth open as she drove away. I know now that this drama had nothing to do with lost keys. It had everything to do with the renewal of my faith.

After this event I put myself into high gear. I was determined to do my part in the healing of my daughter's heart, which I believe led to this moment with my creator. My daughter's doctors had expressed to me that she would most likely be slow developmentally because of the amount of stress on her heart. She had a medium size hole in the heart, stenosis of the aortic valve and her aorta was significantly smaller than that of a normal child's heart. These problems limited the amount of blood flow to her extremities and pumped too much blood to the lungs, which caused two bouts of pneumonia before the age of 6 months. The doctors basically had a "Wait and see" attitude. They said they would perform the surgery at a one year of age if she was healthy enough for it, yet they also explained that if the surgery was put off too long that the damage to the heart would be irrepairable and would require a heart transplant and possibly a lung transplant. So, my job was to get her healthy and keep her that way until her surgery could be scheduled. I began researching every means of alternative medicine and spiritual healing.

For almost a year I worked diligently on her. I used herbs to boost her immune system, acupressure and massage to help with the blood flow problems, meditation tapes to relax her and give her body a chance to heal itself and even did some hands on healing techniques that I had read many Reiki healers use. Although I don't claim to be a healer, I actually saw electrical sparks between my hands and her body during an intense session during which I was asking God's assistance. Day by day I saw my precious little girl becoming stronger and more energetic. She began to walk at 10 months of age, which is good by any standards, and she has not been slow to develop in any area. Although he had been charting her progress every three months, her cardiologist was simply amazed when I brought her in for her one year check up and she was in the 75th percentile on the growth chart for normal children her age. Although he never verbally supported the alternative methods I was using, he did admit that my daughter's progress was astonishing. They scheduled her surgery right away. She came through the surgery with flying colors. She even recovered enough to go home 72 hours after the surgery, which is half the normal recovery time. She is often paraded by her doctors from patient room to patient room in an effort to show other distraught parents what a miracle looks like.

I realized that I was really onto something. If I could turn my critically ill baby's prognosis around in less than a year with the help of these alternative and spiritual ideas, then so could a lot of other people. I was determined to share all the information I had gathered, which amounted to about four full boxes, and keep gathering more information as well. I took all my research and created a monthly holistic newsletter. It has been received quite well. Thanks to the internet I receive articles, ideas and sample requests from all over the world. I know that the ideas, shared in the publication might just help someone else out there to find the miracle they have been seeking. Locally, I have also started to organize holistic bazaars with free lectures, seminars, and demos. Each bazaar will have up to 100 vendor booths for the enrichment of the body, mind, and spirit. What I perceived as the end of my perfect existence turned out to be the beginning of a wonderful new way of life.
