The Feng Shui Forum:
Feng Shui Cures
by Joani Nunez
What is going on when Feng Shui "does not work?" Have you encountered people who say they have tried Feng Shui and nothing happened? Or have you had that disappointing experience yourself? Let's look at what could cause apparent ineffectiveness in our practice of this ancient wisdom.
I always encourage people to keep a Feng Shui notebook. Write down each of your adjustments, the date you made them, the reason you implemented them, and any results that follow. I personally experience the results of my adjustments in a matter of minutes or hours. Other people find that it may take days or even weeks to experience results. However, if after three weeks nothing has happened, then it's safe to say nothing is going to happen.
Many people have a little bit of understanding and then attempt to Feng Shui their space and are disappointed with the results. One misapplication that I frequently see is a cure used that is elementally inappropriate for the gua that in which it falls. For example, many people read that an indoor water fountain is a powerful Feng Shui cure, which is true. However, when it's placed in a fire gua or in an earth gua, it will be counter productive unless it is very carefully and consciously balanced or dominated by the appropriate elements.
Along these same lines, you may have a room located in a gua that destroys that gua's element. The standard or suggested cure may not be strong enough to counter the negative effects of this condition. This is another situation that I run into fairly often. And so again, it's not that Feng Shui does not work, it's that it was not applied with enough skill and understanding. The elements and their relationship to one another are extremely powerful and important in the effective practice of Feng Shui.
A simple example comes from my own life experience. Several years back I leased a home that was terrific in many ways, yet the bathroom was located in the fame and reputation (fire) gua of the home. It had a bath, shower, toilet, and double sink. Simultaneously, the kitchen sink also fell in that same gua. Can you say sputter and glub? The "standard mirror on the bathroom door" cure would not fix this, and considering that glass, or mirror, represents the element water, it would have added insult to injury!
Given that I have been self-employed for most of my life, and that the majority of my work comes from word of mouth, this could have developed into a very bad situation if cures were misapplied. And in a situation like this, the adjustments are cumulative and build on each other. Using the aforementioned as an example, it's obvious that the water needs to be greatly reduced, and the fire needs to be restored and increased.
Working with the relationship between the elements, we know that earth controls water by dominating or absorbing it. So we would introduce the element of earth in many of its forms (clay tile, terra cotta bath accessories, art work, color, etc.) to begin to bring the water into balance. Next, we would restore the fire element by introducing fire in its various forms. And finally, we would strengthen or increase the fire element by feeding it with wood.
Each adjustment builds on the next, and requires its predecessor for strength and support. It's also important to note what the essential, unadjusted Feng Shui of a space is saying about the inhabitants. In my case, I needed a rest. I was at the end of several major and challenging transitions in my life, and had been traveling extensively. I was craving solitude, quiet, and simplicity. Recognizing that, I could allow myself to consciously create those things for myself versus having them "happen" to me because of "bad" Feng Shui.
As I made each adjustment I could literally feel the energy change. Finally, in meditation, I was told to go and buy three large red votive candles, which I did. After doing the blessing and empowering ritual, I lit them. Twenty minutes later my phone began to ring off the wall with business calls, and thankfully has not stopped since!
And so, until next month, many blessings and much happiness. To participate in the Feng Shui Forum, please fax me at 713-861-9243, e-mail me at joani@wt.net, or call me at 713-861-0903 with your questions or contributions. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
