Soul to Soul
by Jacquelyn Small

We awaken through “soul events” – those unusual times when we spontaneously enter a higher state that lifts us into a “peak experience,” where we see the sacred or the big picture all at once — usually in crisis, and only for a moment or two.

Our calling is to a sacred vocation. We’re here to bring spirit into human form, to be ‘technicians of the soul.’ We remember it not, however, and this is our plight.

When we committed to come to earth and take on this sacred incarnational process, never did we dream we would fall so soundly asleep, nor writhe in such a pit of human suffering! Had we known, we would not have come. We thought we’d undertake this mission with a strong and heartfelt remembrance that we are spiritual beings, here on our Creator’s business — to spiritualize matter, each doing our part as individual souls. This is a new process that’s never been done before, one that would bring heaven to earth. This was such an awesome special assignment we thought we were prepared to do. We thought we could stay awake and non-attached. The problem with all this, however, (which we’ve all experienced in some way or other by now) is that in order to be fully human, and totally immerse ourselves in the human condition, we had to put ourselves to sleep, to take on “spiritual blindness” and completely forget our true heritage which is divine. Otherwise, we’d stay somewhat removed and never really know what it is to be human. We can only truly know something by becoming it. The way we bring spirit into humanity is by purifying the bloodlines and eventually cleansing our species of all its mistakes, from the DNA to our mental attitudes. But now, look at us: We’re so stuck in the human condition, believing we are our personal and societal dramas, we’ve forgotten who we are and our spiritual purpose for incarnating.

Our psyches are the human Soul’s reflection. The word ‘psyche’ means soul. But our mirror is fogged with humanity’s ignorance and unclean ways. And each of us as an aspect of the one Soul of Humanity individually carries some part of this distortion within us and in our family system. We purify the human process by taking it on, suffering through the error, and thereby making it conscious through our experience of it, and then correcting it. This creative process is our birthright as divine beings. So here we are – spiritual beings learning to be human. And we mistakenly believe we are human beings learning to be spiritual!

The good news is that many today are awakening from this long, long sleep state. A small group are now peeking out from behind the veil of forgetfulness, checking to see if it’s okay to come out from hiding. This is our soul.

The soul is light. It has no form. It sees through the eyes of love and understanding, and feels from the heart. The soul cares deeply for its human counterpart, the human psyche. And it honors the ego to which it must be dependent in order to be safe here. The ego is concretized spirit. It looks outward and knows the ways of the world of form. It figures out how to function here by following society’s materialistic rules. We all know that without a healthy functioning ego, we’d be living in back wards of State hospitals, unable to tie our shoes! The soul is vulnerable here unless a healthy ego can guide it into the ways of the human world. You’ll know when your soul is in the driver’s seat: It shines through your physical senses with more intensity than does your ego self. When colors are brighter, smells are delicious, or your heart is on fire with compassion, or when you’re having a powerful inspiration, you can bet your soul is here. So take note, and see how soul-conscious you can become. This is your essence, your core Self.

We awaken through “soul events” – those unusual times when we spontaneously enter a higher state that lifts us into a “peak experience,” where we see the sacred or the big picture all at once — usually in crisis, and only for a moment or two. This happened to me when I was twenty-nine during an ‘NDE,’ a clinical near-death experience now known about in science. I’d been hospitalized during a life-threatening hemorrhage, miscarrying a baby. At one point, when the doctors thought I was past the crisis, I awakened with my entire bed filled with blood. I was on the ceiling watching with calm concern. I was having an out-of-body experience, which often accompanies death.”You don’t want to go back in that body, do you?” I said to myself. “Looks like that body’s ‘had it.’” There was no self-pity nor fear, only compassion for that young woman lying helplessly on that bed. Then, within what seemed to be only an instant, I thought of my then eight-year-old diabetic son who depended on me for his well-being, and as though the thought itself propelled me, I was once more back in my body. The doctor and several nurses were there saving my life. That same day, while still in and out of this reality, I was visited by a Being who looked like Jesus ought to look. (I have no idea who he really was.) While gently gazing at me from what looked like a hole in the wall (I now believe it was a hologram), he telepathically communicated with me. He said “Quit trying to take yourself out; you have a mission and you will be guided.”

It was eleven years until my next “soul event” occurred that helped me remember my purpose here. I have now written seven books, based on these messages from these numerous soul events, documenting our soul’s journey through this human life, and have now guided thousands of people through the process of personal transformation and awakening to their life’s work and true purpose. If you are one who is awaking now, you will know it. Some of the symptoms are: You no longer fit in your ususal reference groups. And even some of your dearest friends, think you may be ‘losing it.” You are no longer predictable to them, and bored with what most people turn on to. What now preoccupies your mind are questions like: Who am I? Where did I come from? What is our purpose here? Do I have any power over my future? And is there really someone in charge? Some of you feel you need a religious group or a spiritual guide; others of you may be rather turned off of organized religion and are seeking another way.

Religion is okay if it’s on course and teaches us how to return to our Source, which is divine. The word “religion” actually means “to link back.” Unfortunately, however, many religions have become dogmatic and closed-minded, not at all what we might call “spiritual.” And some of our religious leaders are not modeling for us the kind of human we’d ever want to be. We can forgive them, for we all have shadows, but we also do not have to buy into what our hearts know is not truth. We must do as it says in the Bible, and in other holy books as well: “Seek, and ye shall find.” Spiritual is not the same as religion. Spirituality can take many differing forms. The word “spirit” has been so abused in our culture, I’d like to define spirit in terms that are helpful for our evolving souls: Spirit, according to Jungian John Hitchcock, is an internal “shaping force” that keeps nudging us closer and closer to the realization of our highest ideals.

We experience it as a pulsating energy that moves us  toward the sacred. When we can let spirit into our felt awareness, we feel “inspired,” a thrill that makes us feel like we are heading Home. Spirit is a transcendent function that continually pulls us forward, forever renewing us, and keeping us on course. We follow our inner visions and dreams of how to bring heaven to earth. These images appear in our minds spontaneously, or outwardly as synchronistic meaningful events, beyond our ego’s intellectual control. It is through these inner longings, glimmers, inspirations, and visions of the holy that we continually see pieces of a divine plan unfolding here, a bigger story than our ordinary human conditions, so that we don’t get too caught up in our personal melodramas and forget our purpose here. This is spiritual- in-action, and if we commit to this way of living, this process will eventually guide us Home.

Making Practical Your Spiritual Life

As spiritual beings we would never run off-course if we didn’t have obstacles in the way of our natural spiritual state. These obstacles are usually emotional or mental attachments, ways we get “hooked” that cause us to overreact in uncentered ways. If we can get into that tiny space between the action (the stimulus) and the reaction (our uncentered response), we can catch ourselves in the moment and prevent the predicament we create by our uncenteredness. For this, we need our Observer Self, a part of our inner life that stays detached and able to see the bigger picture. You can think of something that is troubling you right now and practice objectively observing it: in your mind, just see the current problem playing out in life. Stay with the image until you actually feel how it feels to be stuck in it. Then, with your imagination, picture yourself rising above the whole scene, and from above look down on it, and see what is really going on from a wider view.

From above, name the patterns that this event has brought up, and see the reasons for this to be occurring in your life right now. What is your soul wanting you to learn? How did you ever get yourself in this type of situation in the first place? What is your part in it? And what are the others involved needing? Be honest. And see it all clearly.

Then, slowly re-enter the scene in your mind and notice how you feel as you imagine this situation resolving in some positive way. Note where there are still going to be difficulties, and note what attachments you truly have. Then plan to take “the high road” toward this problems solution. Using your Observer Self every time you feel yourself getting into an emotional state over something will help keep you aligned with spirit. You can nip your emotional reactivity in the bud if you will practice this.

Keeping a journal and writing in it on a regular basis is also a way to stay centered in your true Self as you walk through your days. I’ve been doing this for over a decade now, and I can tell you this way of living strengthens our spiritual stature and keeps us from taking on problems we do not need. I enjoy sharing with you on this level of awareness that I call “soul talk.” This way of thinking and living has become the keynote for my life. In our workshop intensives throughout the United States we’ve developed methods and techniques that help our cosmic memory grow stronger so that we don’t allow life’s conditions to take us down. We’ve learned a great psychospiritual truth: “The Self (which is both human and divine) is greater than its conditions!” Someday I hope to meet you face to face.
