"Intention"

One of the ways that you can most benefit from your  practice of Feng Shui is to let go of your preconceived notions regarding what it’s going to do for you. At first, this may seem like a paradox, especially with regard to Black Hat Feng Shui, the Three Secret Reinforcements, intention and visualization, but the paradox is only skin deep.

Using the aforementioned is an important Feng Shui step, and will bring you great results, and yet I’m reminded again and again in my own personal life experience of Feng Shui, how much more the Universe wants to give me than I would claim for myself. The divine power of the universe is vast and limitless, while my own mind tends to misidentify with limits. When I can focus on the highest quality and joy inherent in each of the ba-gua’s life stations, rather than a specific manifestation or outcome, the results are always remarkable, and far beyond my original intention.

I’m not suggesting that you stop using specifics altogether, because they are often an important step, a kind of stepping stone, to the larger realm of the possible. They allow us to feel the energy of love or happiness or fulfillment when we focus on them. My suggestion though, is that you not stop there. Allow the specific intentions and visualizations to act as a bridge to the limitless. At some point, which is a different point for each person, simply let go of your original intention and allow INTENTION to take its place.

This brings to mind something in Feng Shui that I’ve struggled with over the years and have finally come to a place of peace and understanding in regard to. Being a lifelong spiritual student, and having a deep love and regard for ancient wisdom and teachings, I have long been aware of the fact that desire is a dangerous trap. The energy of desire can keep you chasing one thing after another for years and lifetimes. Fulfilling one desire leads to the awakening of the next desire, and so on. And we live in a culture that can have you awakening and chasing desires that you never even knew existed! And yet, paradoxically, it’s the healthy “desire” to improve our life that often lead us to Feng Shui!

Over the years, as I contemplated this, explored it, watched this phenomenon in my life and the lives of others, I began to notice something. There is a world of difference between  dissolving darkness and pain, aligning with the energy of goodness and love in the universe, and a selfish, “I want” desire. My suggestion here would be to begin to examine your motivation. Why is it that you want something to happen or to be a certain way? If you think that getting it or having it occur will make you happy, then you’ll be sadly disappointed. You’ll have a brief moment of celebration, and then restlessness and dissatisfaction will set in again, and off you’ll go, chasing the next dangling “carrot”.

If the motivation underlying something is a call to align with goodness, beauty and love, a longing to offer more in service to others or to creation, then any outer manifestation of this will anchor you in the joy of your own heart, independent of outer circumstances. If you’re responding to the voice of your own Inner Self, and unfolding It’s plan in the universe, then your experience will be: “surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”.

Years ago I had the good fortune to attend a 10-day Vedic fire ceremony, conducted by Brahmin priests. The purpose of the ceremony, called a yajna, was to destroy desire, and to confer dispassion, detachment and contentment on the attendees. At the time, I had no idea how priceless these gifts were, and had more than one moment of consternation. “Won’t life be boring”, I wondered? Now, many years later I realize what all the great mystics have tried to tell us. It’s only in the death of the little self, and the dissolution of selfish and petty desires, that the Great Self is born. One of the more esoteric translations of the Chinese symbols for Feng Shui is “Under the Canopy of Heaven”. I am certain that the ancient Chinese sages were referring to this exalted state of consciousness when they used those symbols.
