by Gary Gandy
Making a bed of brush beneath a row of trees, the soon-to-be mother prepared to give birth. Under the blanket of a Wisconsin night, she began to labor in the quiet pasture. Assisted by only the spirits of nature, a new life was about to begin. The next morning, in the light of day she cradled the newborn close to her body, protective and proud of the life she created, not realizing the miracle she accomplished...
It was the morning of August 20, 1994, on a small southern Wisconsin farm that the world first laid eyes on something so rare, animal experts had believed it was impossible - the birth of a white buffalo calf. This phenominal birth has great spiritual meaning in Native American culture. To those who believe, the birth of the white calf is a prophecy come true and a time of spiritual healing. This sacred event has been painted by Gary Gandy, the only artist given permission by the owners of the calf, Dave and Valerie Heider. A resident of Wisconsin, Gandy has been a professional artist since 1974, specializing primarily in wildlife and nature painting. The image is being offered as a limited edition print with a portion of all proceeds going directly to the care of "Miracle" and her family, allowing the Heiders to keep the farm open to visitors.
