The Science of Spiritual Healing, Part II

by Shirley Williams

Spiritual healing is based on a paradigm shift. This means that we must learn to look at the world in a new way. The shift that occurs in spirituality is that we begin to see ourselves as souls which inhabit our physical bodies and express ourselves through thoughts and emotions, through our personalities. Spiritual healing places primary emphasis upon healing the soul when it has gotten off track. The spiritual healer attempts to reach into the painful and misdirected areas of the soul to gently awaken the healing response. The spiritual healer believes that the source of all illness is forgetting who we are. The healing process helps us remember that we are divine and perfect beings. Outer healing saves biological life while inner healing focuses on belief systems as the contaminating source.

When we make this shift, we move into the realm of esoteric psychology. Esoteric psychology used to be the reserve of a select few; now it is available for anyone who wishes to seek it out. There is such a breadth of material available that you can avail yourself of the information on almost any level. There are two basic, common themes in this esoteric literature: the first is that each of us has the ability to change our lives for the better and the second is that we are all interconnected parts of a whole that is on the brink of a new age. When we begin to live this paradigm shift, we begin to vibrate at a higher frequency, and it is this higher vibrational frequency which eliminates disease and illness and promotes the healing process.

If we have this power and awareness, which I believe we do, it becomes our responsibility to do the work to manifest it. We are the only ones who can awaken our individual inner awareness and see how our individual actions affect the whole. We have to re-own the power we have given away to anything outside of us. we have to take responsibility for our healing.

It is through our individual personalities that we can experience and express our spiritual energies. The more effectively we use our personalities, the more clearly are we able to express our inner souls and contact the spiritual energies within us that give us the power to walk through whatever walls we create in life. We make the paradigm shift described above by working on our personalities. Our personality is our personal existence or identity. It is that which makes us distinctly ourselves, our particular characteristics. It is that part of us which is comparatively exoteric, that is, visible. It is our vehicle for manifestation, experience and expression, who we are in the world, and our impermanent clothing or covering for our souls. While we cannot yet walk through brick walls, we can walk through the walls we have created in ourselves. These walls consist of the physical, emotional, and mental patterns we have that lead us in an unconscious path through our life experiences. As these walls are breached, we can avail ourselves of spiritual energies which can infuse our lives with purpose, meaning, and positive, life-enhancing actions.

It is these walls which we have created in ourselves that lead to energetic blocks within our auric fields. And when these auric fields are not open and flowing, it leads to the formation of disease, for it is the function of the auric field that surrounds us to provide us with the energy we need to function and maintain health. We first sense this through general feelings of being tired or stressed out all the time. While we can take external medications in the hopes of curing this call to action we are experiencing, we also need to be examining what we are thinking, feeling, and doing that is contributing to this experiencing. If we choose not to do this, the reality we create will tend to become more difficult for us.

While a healer can temporarily clear the energetic blocks we have created, we will put them right back in place if we do not examine how our personality runs our lives and begin to address these issues. It is the role of the healer to function as a guide for you in this process. The healer is an aid along your way but cannot remove permanently the walls or blocks you have created. What the healer is trained to do is to help you identify where you are in this process. A trained healer expands the choices available to you, supports you as you become a free agent, and enables you to make choices that lead you to your own healing. Understanding and accepting, the healer at the same time directs and supports the changes you seek to make. The healer empowers you to take charge of your life and your healing. In the next articles, I will help you begin to look at the choices you make at the physical, emotional, and mental levels. You will be able to determine how you impede your own energy flow and how this manifests in your physical body. At the same time I will begin to help you learn to "sit in soul" the interconnection between the personality and spirit. For as you are able to sit in soul, you grow in your personal power, integrity, and overall health. You know you "sit in soul" when you make no judgments, have no expectations, accept that things happen as part of spiritual direction, and have the courage to make the choices that you need to make.
