Sacred Threads: An Anasazi's View
This month's cover picture, by Dennis Cline, shows "Square Tower House", the modern name for a cliffside structure built around 1 0 A.D. by the people we call "Anasazi". The Anasazi and their ancestors lived for many centuries throughout the area known as "Four Corners", where the four states of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah share boundaries. One of the most magnificent concentrations of Anasazi architecture is in Mesa Verde National Park in southwest Colorado. When you visit, there are the usual explanations about the ruins, the presumed timeline, purposes of the structures, and speculation about why and how the site was abandoned.
As I stood looking down the cliffside to "Square Tower House", I sensed that there were many untold stories, sacred threads from the past, waiting to be spun by the spirit guardians of the sites. They are the ones who lived the stories! A year later, when I was at another site, Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico, I met a spirit guide who delights in storytelling, quite often in verse. She was an old friend from our life there together, and she tickled me with tales of our childhood escapades. I was also intrigued by her vast knowledge of history. When we returned home, I asked her to tell me the deeper meaning of "Square Tower House", and this is what she had to say:"
Ah yes, at last we've come to this fair place of checking on exactly what was found here amongst these ruins. "Ruins" are a far cry from what once was a vibrant space of festivity, where girls and boys from younghood came to weave their way through the patterns of time and learn the ways of the olden days. For we too had "olden days" - it was very long that we were here, and times did change as they do today. The heritage preserved was found in this one spot, and education flowed into daily life here, the education from what you know as "scrolls", but which to us was carried in our hearts - the history of time, of the plants and animals, and the energy that animates the Earth.
This was to be learned by each generation, to carry it forward to those who were not so near to God on Earth, who were distanced through time from the Kachina's teachings. For these Beings were present to some, and at all times could be contacted, but for most they became ancient legend. To keep this generational knowledge alive, training was done to pass it on. For most on their own could not contact or access Original Spirit, so it must be held in pictographs, stories and legends. Even for us, a kind of veil did descend, where our spiritual connection Home was thinned, and the Ancient Ones need keep it alive, as they do today, through ritual, training, prayer and play.
This tall tower that you see here, it was a marker for the journey Home, with windows on different levels and ports to view. As ones progressed in spiritual recall, they could climb a higher floor. This was not just "sacred" though, for others could visit and know it too. The kiva fires did warm our souls, and kept the Fiery Trails ablaze, of our return path to the Stars. We could see and remember our true Selves, as we sat in darkness here, save for the fire, and remember well our "Ancestral Well".
This was long ago that we lived in this pictured place, and graced this cliffside with our fair race. Times changed, events fell into place, and we were projected into time and space. Ah yes, they wonder, but to where? To everywhere, my sweet face. What know you of ports of call? It is not like a worldly map, more like that "Star Gate" show you like. We are any place we want to be, though some are nicer, some more free. If you want to contact us more, do what you did - find Evermore! It is the door to everywhere, and from there we will gladly share the peace, the grace, the fun that is life, as we all join together in God's Life."
Definitely a different report than the guide book! I was fascinated by her statements that "we too had olden days" and "even for us, a kind of veil did descend". They too had to focus on remembering their true Selves, just as so many are doing today! The "kivas" she refers to are the round ceremonial structures shown in the picture. They were roofed, and had a small hole or well, the "sipapu", in the center, the symbolic entryway through which the Pueblo tribes and Anasazi originally emerged onto the Earth.
When I look at Dennis's photographs of the ancient sites and the modern-day Pueblos, they work like "Star Gate" for me. Riding on the threads of time, I intensify my awareness of the interconnectedness of all life and the sacredness of the Earth.
The photography of Dennis Cline, as well as petroglyph sandpaintings of Glen Smith, may be seen in a joint show entitled "Sacred Threads", March 6th through May 28th at Enserch Energy, 1301 Fannin, Suite 2300.
