Open Your Communication With Spirit
My grandfather's birthday was in March. He was my favorite person ever because he was non-judgmental and loved me unconditionally. He lived 102 years and 19 days, in very good health until the last month. When he was a young man, he dug a water well by hand, and he farmed with horses pulling the plow. When I was 4 or 5 years old, he would climb a tree and hang by his knees to make us grandchildren laugh as the change fell out of his pockets and our father was filmed us with an 8mm camera (there are no movies of him in the tree, much to my regret). Later, while I was in high school, he lived with our family. If I burned a batch of cookies, he'd say: "Save those for me; that's the way I like them". When he was 99, he broke his hip (and could no longer split wood or tend his vegetable and flower gardens easily). I visited him in the hospital, and reminded him of the tree climbing episodes. He hardly remembered them, but his response to me was: "There couldn't have been much change in the pockets."
My grandfather was named Edward Stegeman. When he married my grandmother, Francis, he took the initial of her first name and became Edward F. Stegeman. When I was about 6 or 7, I named him "Papa", the name by which he was known throughout our community. I had tried to name him "Pop", but he just didn't answer to it, and I'd get frustrated, saying "Pop-p" with emphasis on the last "p". I reflect on the audacity of a child trying to get an adult to answer to another name, and the patience and willingness of the grandfather to humor that child. I was living in Northern California, but had been home to Kansas for his 102nd birthday. He was in a nursing home during this last month of his life, and was sometimes the hospital, and he really disliked being in either of those places. He had always enjoyed my piano playing, so I borrowed a very small organ keyboard, took the church hymnal with me. Not until I brought the keyboard into the hospital did I realize this would probably be the last time I would see him. I played and sang some hymns to him on his 102nd birthday. A number of the other patients and nurses would stop outside the door to listen. I have only a passable singing voice, the organ had at least one key that wouldn't even play, but Papa thought it was wonderful. He had always complimented my piano playing and clarinet playing.
It was a short visit, and I was soon back in California. One Sunday I awakened about seven in the morning , knowing there was a presence with me. I could feel a spirit energy, and although I didn't "hear" any words, it was very clear that Papa was asking me to let him go, to release the energy of his that I held onto so tightly because I didn't want him to leave. I knew exactly what he was asking. He had completed everything here and now, and needed to gather his energy and disconnect the cords that bound him to this plane and his body, and I was one of the people holding on to him. I explained that I really didn't want him to go and he patiently waited for me to realize that it really was time. When I put away my selfishness, knowing that I loved him so much I could let him go, I felt energy lift up out of my body, was aware that it went to his spirit, and then he left. My mother called later that morning, said Papa had passed away about nine in the morning, Kansas time.
Seven months later I had my first reading at the Berkeley Psychic Institute. I was amazed the readers could see this love, and loss, I felt for my grandfather. They spoke right to the real me: spirit. As I started studying there, I realized how precious the communication of spirit to spirit is. Spirit communication is always available, whether the body is here, across the continent, or the spirit no longer is in a body. In some instances, we may communicate with a spirit that has never had a body on this planet.
I can rush around the house, frantically searching for an object (often my keys), then finally relax and ask my spirit healing master to find the object. It helps to show him a mental image picture of what I want him to find. Next I walk through the house again, just opening my awareness to being shown where the object is. Suddenly I have the urge to look under something, and even thought I'm sure I've looked there before, there's my object. Or it might even have been in plain sight, but my physical vision just did not see it.
Here's an exercise to communicate to one of
your spirit guides. Sit at your table, eyes closed. Take a few deep, relaxing
breaths. Quiet your mind and create an energy connection from your first chakra (energy
center near the base of the spine) to the center of the earth. Make it a tree trunk, or
perhaps a pipeline. Let it be a secure connection that makes it safe for you, the spirit,
to be at home in you, the body. Now visualize a really large rose on the table, in front
of you. Give it a stem that goes all the way to the center of the earth. This is a
separation rose that defines the boundary of your space. It is to remind you that you are
a spirit, separate from everyone else's energies, and it is a "hello" to others
to respect that boundary.
With your eyes closed, mentally ask all your spirit guides to go outside the room. They
can play under a nearby tree, or even on the roof. Now ask that one spirit guide come back
in and "sit" in the chair across the table from you. Say hello to that spirit.
Ask it what it's name is. Be quiet, patient, and just observe what you see or hear or
sensewith abilities other than your physical senses. Keep this a fun, happy and simple
exercise. It's easy to succeed when you're in kindergarten - curious like a child. If you
like, have pencil, crayons and paper available to record what you sense. If you sense
though your hands, then put up your hand to feel the energy, to feel the color of it. Did
you get a name from the spirit? If not, then tell it you will give it a nickname until
you're aware of its name. Remember that this spirit is also learning to communicate with
you. Do you see the color or valance this spirit is showing. Ask yourself what is that
color? Ask yourself what valance (man, woman, tall, elf-like, ball of light) does this
spirit show you? Before you finish the communication, ask your spirit guide if there is
anything else he/she would like to tell you. Sit quietly for a couple of minutes to see if
you're aware of it's response.
Then thank the spirit guide and let it get back to it's own business. As you repeat this exercise, ask some other questions: did you two have a past life, why is he/she a guide for you this lifetime, in what particular area of your life does this guide assist you, does it like to ride with you in the car (or on the roof?). Notice if your spirit guide sings along with you. Notice if you laugh out loud, and then wonder what was the joke your spirit guide told you. Not every spirit guide wants to assist you with every aspect of your life; they often specialize, just like the rest of us, so if you have a particular problem, then ask to talk with the spirit guide who wants to assist you with it. Always show respect to these spirits by thanking them for their assistance. As your communication with spirit guides becomes clearer, notice if your communication with spirits in bodies (friends and coworkers) becomes clearer too. It can happen!
