My dog was just diagnosed with cancer. What can I do to help my dog to heal? AC, Houston, TX
Cancer treatment in animals has made advancements, just like human cancer therapy. Your veterinarian can give you information on the latest treatments, or you can ask for a referral to a veterinary specialist that deals only with cancer, called an oncologist, for the latest information.

In order for animals to re-build healthy immune systems, they must have clean air, water, and food. You can assist and support your companion with diet, herbs, vitamins, and   minerals. You can provide cleaner air in your home with air purifiers or filters. Air filters remove pollutants from the air that you breathe. The most popular air filtration system is the Hepa filter, which takes care of dust, pollen, and other particulates. More complete systems are air purifiers by   Alpine which kill bacteria, fungus, mold, and mildew.  Alpine purifiers also convert harmful gases to breathable air, and filter the air of particulate matter including animal dander. Air filters take care of the room where the air filter is located, whereas Alpine air purifiers cover an entire house, up to 3000 square feet.

One of the first supplements that I recommend for animals with cancer is Essiac tea, which is helpful in        dissolving tumors. It was created by Canadian nurse Rene Caisse. The results are very positive in cancer recovery. Ask your local herb store for this product. Look for the liquid tea, as it is more effective than the dried herb. It is also important to get the exact formula developed by Caisse, as some of the others are not exactly the same blend of herbs.

In CJ Puotinen’s book, The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care, other helpful herbs are listed. These include aloe vera, Carnivora, chaparral, Hsiao Chai Hu Tang, and Noni. Puotinen also recommends the Hoxsey Therapy, a blend of herbs developed by Harry Hoxsey. The Hoxsey formula contains red clover blossom, licorice root, buckthorn bark, burdock seed, stillingia root, Oregon grape root, poke root (also called red herb root), prickly ash bark, wild indigo root, and potassium iodide. Puotinen says that this blend is a “blood purifier which acts through the lymph system, glands, mucous membranes and skin, enhancing the breakdown and elimination of metabolic wastes and improving the overall assimilation of nutrients.”

Water quality is also important in supporting your companion to combat cancer. I recommend that your        companion drink Willard Water. This is catalyst-altered water contains microscopic particles of lignite. These lignite particles contain natural antibiotics, germicidals, amino acids, and over 50 trace minerals. You purchase Willard Water in 8 or 16 ounce bottles, and add a small amount of it to purified or filtered water. Give Willard-treated water to your animal companion for their drinking water. You can also apply it to wounds, burns, or directly to their coat to assist in healing. Willard Water seems to help the body eliminate toxins and increase the absorption of nutrients. It is also a superior antioxidant and scavenger of free radicals. I have had first-hand experience with the healing properties for Willard  Water. I truly believe that Willard Water was the factor that saved my cat’s life when she decided to take a dive in used motor oil. I bathed her in Willard Water to cut the grease. She drank Willard Water as she healed. Now, all my animals, and I, drink Willard Water daily. I always stress the importance of good food in the healing process. Dr. Pitcairn, in Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, recommends that you take your companion off all commercial foods and feed a raw organic diet. Why is raw food superior? Cooking destroys heat-sensitive vitamins, trace minerals, and amino acids.

It’s true that raw meat may contain parasites or harmful bacteria. The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care lists several methods to disinfect raw food. In addition to what is listed there, you can also disinfect by spraying raw food with dilute Willard Water. Giving vitamin and mineral supplements, digestive enzymes, and acidophilus will also assist yourcompanion to heal.

Here are Puotinen’s suggestions for a healthy breakfast menu: 1 or 2 servings of bananas, apples, melon servings or other fruit; or 1 avocado sprinkled with unrefined sea salt; or 1/4 to 1/2 cup raw oat flakes or similar raw, whole grain cereal flakes or raw, sprouted wheat or rye, soaked in 1/2 cup raw milk, goat milk, raw fruit or vegetable juice, fresh yogurt or water; or 1 cup Lactaid-treated cottage cheese, live-culture yogurt or kefir; or 1/2 cup raw milk cheese and 1 raw egg. Dinner selection includes: 1 to 1-1/2 pounds raw bones and meat, 2 to 4 tablespoons finely minced fresh wheat grass, dandelion greens, collard greens or other fresh herbs, 1/4 cup finely minced or puréed raw vegetables (carrot, parsnip, pepper, cucumber, etc.) or pressed vegetables.

When your dog is dealing with a serious illness, it is important to give as much nutritional and environmental   support as possible. I suggest that you avoid vaccinations at this time. The animal’s immune system is already stressed, and giving vaccinations will stress it even more. Dr. Pitcairn says this: “Giving a vaccine to an animal with cancer is like pouring gasoline on a fire.”

Hearing that your beloved companion has cancer is challenging and frightening, but you can play an active role in healing. Feed a healthy diet, limit vaccinations, and give your companion lots of love.
