FAITH IN REASON AND GRACE by John Calvin

The processes of painting are not unlike the processes of  nature. All nature is a pattern of relationships,  unfolding to create the substance of our realities, relativity. In painting there are the surface relationships; color, texture, line, form, and tone, creating the patterns of perception; but this is just “paint.” There is also the evolving relationship of symbolic consciousness, weaving the endless moment, crystallizing the infinite processes of       creation.

The painting, “Reason and Grace,” is based on the symbolic structure of faith. The cosmic temple of reason. Faith, in this sense, is not  a belief, it is the substance created through relationships, the relativity, or dance of wisdom and passion. This is not the knowledge of the intelligent mind, but rather, the deep, mysteriously intuitive mind of our creator. Passion is the primal, yet pristine breath of all desire, spinning the seas of stars on the open fields of grace. Reason and Grace are intimately connected on the spiralling web of consciousness, spinning the endless folds of existence. This is no different than the “mechanics” of any relationship, or of any relative value, dependent on faith in consciousness, connecting to our flesh  and our bicameral minds. There is faith that we choose; our belief   systems. And there is faith that is the structure of reality, the primal, pure nature of our consciousness. It is the glue of all  substance, evolving on all planes of endless, empty space, creating the  infinite moment. It is not the gate, it is the transcending spirit, the  frozen eye of the cosmic storm spinning the restless tides of creation.  We all seek the infinite power of faith, but we fear its truth, the sharpness of the blade cutting through all of our consciousness. Faith is not clinging to our beliefs; our egos. Faith is “opening up”, letting  go of our expectations. It is knowing “the way”, better than one’s self. Our relentless egos examine “who we are”, as our faith guides us towards the moment, connecting us to the speeding light, the process of  relativity.

Our existence is composed of relative values, the substance of  energy, the dynamics of relationships. We all have many relationships in our lives; relationships with those we love, our careers and dreams,  our communities, our humanity, our planet...and beyond. We are connected  intimately with our infinite cosmos. The patterns of our existence evolve relative to our relationships, and reality unfolds. Symbolically, I   consider all relative values, or relationships, to be triangular, in nature. Intimate Triangles, crystallizing the mechanics of consciousness, energy woven into substance. The three parts of the world   create the seed, from which folds all existence. There is no doorway  through which to pass, there is no other side, there are only the infinitely evolving waves of consciousness collectively creating all reality.

Just as transcendence is not escapism, transcending the dimensions of consciousness is not opening the door to other dimensions. As all dimensions interact collectively, every moment is an opportunity to reaffirm our faith. We are the essence of all creation, connecting us, intimately with our creator. We ride the rail of light, looking backwards through time, through the essence of existence. If we follow the path, backwards, it simply leads us back to the beginning. Instead, we must choose our own paths, to make our creation unique, to explore the infinite potential of our consciousness. We will not find the place which we are seeking, so it is better to find our realities where they exist, in the moment, with no pretention, no ego. It is there that we will find the gap, the space to unfold our eternal essence.

As we are entering the final year of the second millennia, we merge into the symbolic transformation of time       consciousness. We literally stand at the threshold of the next thousand years, as the tides of time shift the relative values of consciousness. It is our choice to create whatever kind of existence we perceive. We must open our minds and our hearts, We must transcend on the wing of gentle grace. There is no creation without passion, without love. We must walk the path together, seeking compassionate reason; the nature of consciousness.
