Emotional ‘Art Forms’

by Georgie Holbrook

Most of us have been taught to curse our physical symptoms and to get rid of them through surgery or medication. Doing this sends messages to our spiritual selves that say "You’re not okay," or "This organ or breast isn’t needed." We tell ourselves we don’t have time to feel, grieve or heal naturally. However, if we can see our symptoms and diseases as "art forms" sent to redirect our health and happiness, we can experience true healing and joy-filled living.

Looking in the mirror, I witnessed my own emotional pain as an ‘art form,’ and as this honest messenger transformed in front of my eyes, I healed from a devastating disease.

By age 37 I felt successful in my new clothes, home and car. I was hired when companies needed help in solving complex business problems, and my normal workday averaged 12 to 14 hours. Then one day it was all over. I was in a specialist’s office being diagnosed with rosacea, an "incur-able," deforming, disfiguring facial skin disease. Treating myself like an infallible machine had caught up with me.

The disease had no mercy as it continued to worsen for the next six years. I spent all my financial resources going from medical specialists to naturopathic practitioners, in my heart begging to understand how my immune system did healing and repair. I concluded that the body is a natural system, so I chose to avoid medications.

By age 42 my face was a bright, fire engine red, raw and inflamed, and I lanced boils daily. All my dreams of having a good life, leadership, and travel appeared to be over. I realized why people with so much internal pain end their lives or take up addictions.

In the seventh year, I sought out a professional group that offered workshops on letting go of fear and past traumas. The first day I felt fragile, and in my second-hand clothing, I felt humiliated about having to accept their scholarship.

No one up until now had suggested emotional support, nor did I realize I needed this type of help. This group asked important questions: What does it "feel" like to have a disease? Have you had any thoughts of suicide? What does it feel like to have your body let you down? When was the last time you experienced real joy?

After one year of sharing my painful story, crying and releasing my pent-up emotions with a safe community, a miracle took place and I healed physically without scars. It felt like a light switch inside of me had been delightfully turned on as I reclaimed my body, mind and spirit.

Reflections of the ‘Art Form’

Allergies were my first sign of imbalance before the onset of rosacea. I learned that allergies and sinus problems have a direct link to a toxic, tense colon.

My red face was a direct reflection of my stressed organs. I began to notice other symptoms, such as an uncomfortable quiver and knot in my stomach, cold hands and feet, varying body temperature, weakened vision, and shallow breathing with chest pains. These were all directly related to living in what felt like a wooden, joy-less body.

I had put my anger and discouragement into endless work projects, even with this disease. Internally I was exhausted, numb, traumatized and functioning on automatic. Those around me never noticed or tried to care for me like a patient, because all of us thought "it was just on my face." What I needed was emergency rest, nurturing and emotional support for however long it took to heal.

I learned self-love and joy are great medicine, so I stopped hating the disease and instead nurtured myself like an abandoned, scared child. I refused to be around anything or anyone negative and focused all my energy on healing. It took one year to heal physically and another 10 years to heal my body memories to the point I could feel empowered and confident.

Other Examples of ‘Art Forms’

Once I healed, I knew what worked for me can work for others. Following are just a few stories of how healing is possible when we view our "art forms" with love and compassion:

A 35 year old client had been diagnosed with pre-cancer in her female organs. She had been molded in the image of her parents, with few, if any, feelings or emotions. After three sessions she found her answers and promised her female organs to do whatever it took to heal her past and reclaim her intuition and spiritual self. She also began a healthy lifestyle of good diet and yoga. Three years later this condition has not returned.

Another client had cysts on her ovaries that prevented her from getting pregnant. Through our prayer, her intuition revealed that the cysts were spiritual messengers to help her avoid having children with a man she didn’t love. She eventually divorced, releasing her years of guilt at not getting pregnant as she realized how God had blessed her. Praising the cysts for their intelligence and not their curse, she then began to heal.

A third client had a vital organ removed. She and I performed a ritual to grieve this loss. Through dialoguing with these body parts, her spiritual self revealed that this organ took her years of anger for being in a non-loving relationship and shut down. She admits, "what a price to pay for sacrificing happiness."

How to Work With Your ‘Art Forms’

You, too can dialogue with your body, realizing that emotions manifest as physical symptoms that, once heard, can possibly be reversed. Start by talking to those body parts with love and inquire of their desires and needs. Then take action.

Disease occurs when we lose contact with the body’s underlying intelligence responsible for maintenance, healing, and repair. Unfortunately, the body must, at times, get our attention through an "art form" of pain, illness, and disease. By keeping our agreement with the sacred, we can live joy-filled lives.
