THE FENG SHUI FORUM:
East and West Life Group People

Welcome back to our exploration of Feng Shui and the directions. We’re now at the place where we’re ready to  determine whether you are an East Life Group person or a West Life Group person. Remember that these designations do not in any way imply a hierarchy or judgment. They are simply descriptive. They refer to a kind of imprinting or “wiring” that we received from the patterns of Cosmic Chi at the time of our birth.

Before we move to the mathematical calculations that will give you your life group, we need to begin first with the  “magic square”, the grid we all know in one form as the ba-gua. This grid is mathematically numbered, so that each gua has a specific number associated with it. So for example, Kan, or Career, belonging to the water element, always relates to the number 1. Li, or Fame, belonging to the fire element, always relates to the number 9. The entire square is laid out below.

You’ll notice that if you add the numbers together, whether horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, they always add up to 15. Magic! The ancient Chinese, like many other advanced cultures, had worked out the mathematical formulas that rule the invisible forces, or universal laws, governing both heaven and earth.

Okay, so now you know where the Kua number associated with your directions come from! Remember, that just like East and West houses, the elements wood, water, and fire are associated with the east, and earth and metal are associated with the west. Now we can move on to the calculations themselves. Different people have developed different shortcuts for figuring this out. I’m sharing Lillian Too’s with you here. There are two different formulas that are used, one for women and one for men.

 One important note, if your birthday falls in January or the beginning of Feb, you will need to use the year preceding your birth to work the formula. The Chinese calendar is based on the Lunar new year which begins in Feb.

Calculations for Females: 
Example:

Should your calculations add up to a 5, you are assigned the number 8 (earth both ways) as your Kua number.

Calculations for Males: 
Example:

Should your calculations add up to a 5, you are assigned the number 2 (earth both ways) as your Kua number.

Referring back to the “magic square”, you can see that numbers 1, 3, 4, and 9 belong to the East Life group, while numbers 2, 6, 7, and 8 belong to the West Life group. East Life group people ideally live with other East Life group people in East houses, while West Life group people will do best living in a West house with other West Life group people.
