Ramblings of a Roving Runes Caster, Conclusion
 BY ALLAN T. PERKINS

If you liked the series …you’ll love the book!

For more than two years we have been exploring the oracle of the runes in this space. We started out by exploring what the runes are and how they work as an oracle. Then, we looked at each of the twenty-four glyphs of the Elder Futhark, and the blank rune or the unknowable, each with their own column.

In the process, I hope you realized that several themes ran through our study. One of the most critical to the operation of the oracle was the importance of the spiritual realm. Those who have been following this column will remember that we talked about the importance of meditation almost every month. Remember that the runes are a spiritual tool. Like any other spiritual tool, you manipulate them in the physical,  mechanic, mundane world. However, this mechanical action is the easiest and least important part of using the runes. Regular spiritual activity, including prayer and meditation, is a must for any practitioner of an oracle.

Also, remember that the runes are an empathic oracle. The more you work with a given set of runes the more they react to your touch and emotions. This, of course, means the more you work with a given set of runes, the better you can help someone using them. However, the downside of empathy is that if you have not been meditating and maintaining your spiritual health, this too will show in the oracle. It will make it much more difficult to accurately use the runes.

Another theme which we continually looked at was that of the Nordic mythological pantheon. We saw where almost every runic glyph was related to one or more of the gods, goddesses, or other mythological characters. We also learned that knowing the individual mythological stories allowed us to better understand the delicate meaning of the runic glyphs. For example, we can better understand Teiwaz, the rune of the spiritual warrior, if we know the stories about Tyr, the true spiritual warrior. His actions to protect Asgard show us in vivid detail the concepts of natural law and right action at work.

So, we spent two years looking at the runes as an oracle. However, they can and have been used for other magical  purposes also. We want to spend the rest of this final column discussing some of these other uses.

The glyphs of the Elder Futhark have been used for blessings, protections, and curses for hundreds of years. When you use the runes to bless or protect a house or other space, there are several things you should remember. First, as with the oracle, the number of glyphs you use is critical. There is not room in this column to explain it in detail. But, as a rule, blessings should only be three, eight, or nine glyphs long. Then, they should be developed individually for each situation. No two spaces are the same or are used for exactly the purposes. The people using each space are different also; same thing when you’re going to use runes to protect a tool or  possession. Tailor the blessing to the object and the user. Then, don’t forget the importance of spiritual purification and rituals.

I never do curses. First, I never use the runes to hurt  anyone. I will not do “positive curses” either. Why? Easy, I don’t claim to know the will of the gods. Let’s say, for example, that you come to me with a request to put a “love curse” on a person you want to become your lover. I do and they do. Only, the gods may be planing a more extraordinary lover for you. My tinkering got in the way. So, I prefer not to second-guess the gods.

Another common practice is to use runic glyphs for charms and pendants. They do make nice gifts, and can serve as a very effective bond between two people. The best thing is to make the charm yourself. As you do ritually bless and purify it. If you can’t make an appropriate charm and must purchase one, fine. However, even then you can purify and bless it. You can expend some mundane, emotional, and spiritual energy making the gift a part of you and individually imprinted for the person.

This has been a very quick review of some of the main topics we’ve spent the last two and a half years studying. We also very briefly looked at other uses for the runic glyphs. I wish time and space allowed more, but it does not.

If this column, and the series, has helped enlighten and bless any of you, than I’m pleased. It means I’ve shown right action and am also blessed.
