The Feng Shui Forum:
Traveling

by Joani Nunez

As I write this month’s column with one hand, I’m packing with the other. I am spending the last two weeks of March studying in California with Master Lin Yun and Seann Xenja. I love to travel, always have, yet from a Feng Shui perspective there arises a whole series of challenges. Traveling often means countless hours spent immersed in high electromagnetic fields. Airports literally hum with them, as do the aircraft themselves. These energy fields can be extremely debilitating. They can drain our bodies of chi, causing headaches, irritability, depression and insomnia.

Couple this with changing time zones and we have the classic jet lag experience. Being blessed with incredible health, an awareness of the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields came to me rather late in my practice of Feng Shui, and it came via students and clients who struggled with their health. It was obvious that electromagnetic fields had a strong negative impact on their health, and I began to look for ways to help them.

I discovered that there are all kinds of devices out there, and there’s a wide range of cost as well as effectiveness. I’m happy to report that the most powerful devices that I’ve found are also extremely affordable, costing less than $20.00. One kind is worn against your body, and another kind can be worn as jewelry. I’ve discovered that wearing these devices while traveling completely prevents jet lag no matter how many time zones I fly through.

Give me a call if you’d like more details regarding these items. The next Feng Shui travel challenge is those hotel rooms! Even the best among them are filled with dead, stale chi and predecessor energy. If it’s a large hotel, you’re also contending with being sandwiched between other rooms and other occupant’s energies. Add to this the sharp angles of traditional furniture, the mix of bedroom and bathroom chi, secret arrows, and those ever present electromagnetic fields, and it’s no wonder so many people dislike travel and are depleted by it.

What to do? First, clear the room energetically, using whatever means you prefer. I use a traditional Feng Shui interior chi adjustment ritual, but there are many other methods. I always travel with several small mirrors and double sided tape. I install these next, adjusting any intruding energy. Tassels then take care of cutting edges, crystals adjust chi flow, and I’ll often rearrange the furniture for a more harmonious environment. I then check for electromagnetic fields and correct for these.

When all of the above is finished I light incense and begin to layer in place the higher vibration that I want to stay in. I put on a chanting tape that I’ve brought with me, and fill the space with the higher frequency of spirit. If I’m staying for an extended period of time, I write on red paper the intent of my stay, what I want to experience and accomplish while I’m there, and I place this in the Fame and Reputation/Transformation gua of the room.

Then I unpack my traveling puja/alter, set up the pictures of my meditation teacher and spiritual lineage, place flowers as an offering, and finally set up my meditation cushion. After showering, I’m in the same pristine condition as the room and ready for meditation, which completes the transformation of the hotel room energetically.

The final consideration for happy travel is the state of our inner or personal Feng Shui. How is our physical health and emotional well-being? Is our body well-nourished by the diet we eat and kept strong with physical exercise? Have we left our home life in harmony so that we can travel without worry? Have we attended to the details of all of our travel arrangements, and do we honor time so that we easily make all of our connections without the stress of running late? Have we arranged to return to a clean and cheerful space? Have we given ourselves time upon returning to acclimate and reenter our daily affairs gently? These simple things also greatly impact our travel experiences.

So now I need to continue my own process of travel preparation. My studies this trip focus on Feng Shui for businesses, and I’m really looking forward to this advanced training. I had hoped to drive the California coast from San Diego to San Francisco, but the Feng Shui of California right now suggests an alternate route! Bon voyage for now, and I will update you all upon my return. And so, until next month, many blessings and much happiness.
