HOW THE WHITE SPIDER COLUMN GOT ITS NAME
And when the spider weaves her web around the world, the world will change.__ Old Proverb
Whoever wrote this ancient proverb knew something about communication. I found this quote and used it in a paper I wrote in graduate school. From that time, the proverb not only stuck in my mind, but also helped to shape my future.
When I was asked to write this column in conjunction with being webmaster of the Indigo Sun website, I used meditation to help me come up with a name. Much to my surprise, I was guided to take a ride on a spider, a big, ugly black one, and I shrank away in fear.
You will have to get over that, my guidance replied, if you are going to write a spiritual column about Internet.
So, in my mind, I approached with great trepidation, and crawled on the back of the spider. As I began to feel safe, and started to relax, the spider climbed onto the worldwide web and started a global journey. I marveled at the intricacy and interconnectivity that existed everywhere. I saw people chat to people on the other side of the world, eere one was shrouded by the darkness of midnight, another basked in the joy of morning sun, and yet another watched day fade at dusk in quiet repose. All in real time, chatting.
Nothing ever happens without purpose. Last night I saw a science fiction television show about two men who were stranded on another planet. All around them were spiders that bit them. The venom from the spider gave the person the ability to shape his reality into whatever he wanted it to be.
When the show was over, I realized I had seen it for a reason. The White Spider in my column can also change how we perceive each other, because when we come into closer contact with our brothers and sisters on the planet, we come to have a deeper understanding of each other.
Just as new markets have opened up worldwide, and are changing the face of the planet, new ideas are spreading very fast, because when people have the benign spider (the Internet) between them, they are safe to explore each others life-styles, belief systems and ways of being without getting caught up in any of it. Being able to have a chance to observe from a distance, to explore and ponder new thoughts and beliefs gives each person the ability to choose with wisdom and freedom.
Think about how changes in consciousness have occurred in the past. A country would go to war against another country and, once the one country was subdued, the victor country imposed its will on the vanquished country. Although appearing to be effective superficially, many people in the Soviet Union clung to their religious beliefs all those years, and the Jews, who suffered much persecution at the hands of conquerors, still maintained their belief system in secret and under cover.
Finding out about people and their beliefs from the safe distance of the Internet can change our attitude toward one another more permanently than any conquest. This shift in beliefs and the resulting age of tolerance and understanding is the potential of the Internet.
In my meditation, the spider I was riding on deposited me at a door. I walked in and found myself in a round room with many large television screens on the walls. On each screen were people from different parts of the world, all chatting in real time, by both audio and video.
Then, a beautiful white spider dropped down on a thin gossamer thread into the middle of the room. Peace on earth will look like this, she said, with people meeting on the web, in real-time, and talking about whatever they desire.
And I knew in that instant the White Spider was Spirit, and the Internet was Spirits vehicle to bring us peace, love, and community on a shrinking planet, if we will just use it.
